Functional Magnetic Resonance in Binasal Hemianopia
نویسندگان
چکیده
The authors report a case of binasal hemianopia in a 34-year-old female who, at the age of 22 years, underwent resection of a pinealoma located at the 3rd ventricle. Less than a year after the surgery, partial visual field losses occurred. Examination of retina, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) as well as examination of the ganglion cell complex (GCC) excluded a pregeniculate lesion. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) responses evoked by both biand monocular stimulation confirmed our finding of reduced activity in the visual cortex corresponding to the damage in a portion of the visual pathway.

Complete binasal hemianopia.
Binasal hemianopia is a rarely encountered visual field defect. We examined two asymptomatic female patients, aged 17 and 83, with complete binasal hemianopia. Both patients had unremarkable eye exams except for the visual field deficits and minimally reduced visual acuity and color vision. Both patients had normal neuroimaging. These are the first reported cases of complete binasal visual fiel...
متن کاملNeurological Hemifield Test in Binasal Defects.
We read with great interest the paper by McCoy et al. validating the neurological hemifield test (NHT) to detect and classify visual field loss caused by chiasmal or postchiasmal lesions. In this paper, more than 60% of glaucoma eyes misclassified as neurological according to the NHT score criterion had binasal defects. Therefore, interpreting binasal hemianopia is a particular challenge. To em...
متن کاملBinasal hemianopia.
Three patients with nasal visual field defects are described. In each case it is believed that compression of the lateral fibres of the optic nerve by the anterior cerebral or internal carotid artery was the cause. Binasal hemianopia can thus be produced by a single lesion and is as much a true hemianopia as the common bitemporal one. The value of careful neuroradiological investigation to disp...
متن کاملA Case of Functional (Psychogenic) Monocular Hemianopia Analyzed by Measurement of Hemifield Visual Evoked Potentials
PURPOSE Functional monocular hemianopia is an extremely rare condition, for which measurement of hemifield visual evoked potentials (VEPs) has not been previously described. METHODS A 14-year-old boy with functional monocular hemianopia was followed up with Goldmann perimetry and measurement of hemifield and full-field VEPs. RESULTS The patient had a history of monocular temporal hemianopia...
متن کاملAn atypical presentation of functional visual loss
RATIONALE Functional visual loss (FVL) can manifest as various symptoms. Decreased distant visual acuity is the most common symptom and visual field defect is the second most common symptom. Hemianopsia is rarely reported. In an atypical situation of FVL, it is important to prove that no organic pathology exists, through detailed history taking and appropriate examinations. PATIENT CONCERNS T...
